My Neighbours

Chinese men in ragged pants
throw and chuck and haul,
sharks and fish and crabs all dance;
they shout and whistle and roar.

Accompanied by the sound of a Chinese ladies song;
her notes resonating sweet and soft and long.
Scaling off the boat, she's cut loose like a ballon,
in satin and pearls and tiny shoes she climbs up to the moon.

Her lungs bellow and bounce to the guarded port gate
high unshaken notes, scatter on the windy gusts and breaks.
She plays through a busted wavering speaker system
but, I wonder if she knows?

I wonder if she knows...
She entertains Chinese men by night in a foreign, distant land
men who order the black man about
standing strong with umbrella in hand.

Her country men in ragged pants
throw and chuck and haul,
sharks and fish and crabs all dance,
they shout and whistle and roar.

I walk past their territory and they usher me away.
White girl walk on by, eyes and ears closed tight
do not smell the rotten stench, or see the evenings plight!
White girl walk on by. Walk towards the light.

I wonder if she knows?
Chinese men in ragged pants
throw and chuck and haul,
sharks and fish and crabs all dance
they shout and whistle and roar   20140117-021737.jpg
